The madness begins Sunday night

Midnight Madness this Sunday night kicks off the NCAA basketball season at Georgia College & State University.

At the stroke of midnight Sunday, fresh off a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2006-07, the Lady Bobcats will take the floor for a 20-minute intersquad scrimmage. The guest coaches remain a secret at this time, with more information forthcoming.

Following the Lady’s scrimmage, the Men’s squad will hold a dunk contest and a three-point shootout for both teams. The capper for the night will be a 20-minute scrimmage by the Men’s team.

GCSU Athletic Department staff will flip free pancakes all night, with top spatula honors going to Director of Athletics Stan Aldridge.

The 2007 Peach Belt Conference Champion Dance Team will perform, and the three-time National Champion Bobcat Cheerleading squad will be on hand to perform and keep up the excitement.

Additionally, the Midnight Madness celebration will help kick off the GCSU Alcohol Awareness Week, a University-wide initiative of exciting events ending Saturday, Oct. 20. The week begins with a Tailgate Party at the Reflection Pool at 8 p.m., leading into the 10 p.m. start for at the Centennial Center.

Guest judges for the Slam Dunk Contest have been finalized. The three guests are Ryan Greene the Student Government Association president, Corey Dickstein, sports editor for the Colonnade (the award-winning GCSU student newspaper) and Chris McCorkhill, president of the Thundercats (GCSUÕs official student-spirit group).

The doors open at the Centennial Center at 10 p.m. Sunday for the annual hoops season kickoff celebration.

The season kickoff is free and open to the public, encouraging some Bobcat fans to consider calling in “sick” Monday.
