The Jones were honored during Utah State’s homecoming festivities this fall.

“It’s rather humbling,” said Jones, vice president for administration and operations at Georgia College, in online publication “When you think about the university’s rich history and all the people who have come through here to receive such recognition, it is just overwhelming. We are both extremely honored.”

A native of South Central Los Angeles, Jones attended Utah State from 1981 to 1984 on a football scholarship and also participated in track and field.

He earned both a bachelor’s degree in speech communications and master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Utah State. He earned a doctorate of philosophy in education and human resource studies at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.

Sylvia Jones also attended Utah State, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics. She earned a master’s degree in business administration from Western State College in Gunnison, Colo.

The homecoming honorees met on Utah State's campus. They have two children, Isaiah and Daphne, who also attend Utah State as student-athletes. Isaiah Jones is a cornerback on the football team, and Daphne Jones competes in the long and trip jump for track and field.

“We both understand the value of athletics and the powerful way it can impact lives,” said Jones in “It wasn’t so much following our footsteps but knowing what this kind of experience can provide — the lessons learned on the field, how to work with a team and working through adversity.”
