The Old Governor’s Mansion at Georgia College will feature a lecture with Dr. John C. Inscoe, the Albert B. Saye Professor of History at the University of Georgia.

Inscoe will discuss his newest work, “The Civil War in Georgia,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 7 in the Education Building behind the mansion.

“This book is the official companion to our state encyclopedia, ‘The New Georgia Encyclopedia,” in tracing the Civil War’s history in Georgia,” said Matt Davis, curator of the Old Governor’s Mansion. “This informative lecture will give new insights about the history of our state.”

The event is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.

Inscoe’s book chronicles diversity of Georgia’s Civil War experiences, from secession and emancipation to politics and the battlefield.

For the past 25 years, Inscoe has taught Southern history at the University of Georgia. The Western North Carolina native focuses much of his research and writing on 19th-century Southern Appalachia, specifically on Civil War, race and slavery issues.

Inscoe earned his bachelor’s degree in history at Davidson College in North Carolina. He earned his master’s degree and doctorate in American history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Currently, he serves as distinguished lecturer of the Organization of American Historians and secretary-treasurer of Southern Historical Association.

“I urge the campus and local community to attend this event, especially since the author will discuss Milledgeville’s role during the war,” said Jim Turner, director of the Old Governor’s Mansion. “Throughout this horrendous time, we were the state capital. The mansion also played ‘host’ to Union Gen. William T. Sherman and his army during November 1864.”

“The Civil War in Georgia” will become available for purchase in the Gift Shop at the Old Governor’s Mansion.
